Comparison of formulas for drag coefficient and settling velocity of spherical particles

چکیده
Two formulas are proposed for explicitly evaluating drag coefficient and settling velocity of spherical particles, respectively, in the entire subcritical region. Comparisons with fourteen previously-developed formulas show that the present study gives the best representation of a complete set of historical data reported in the literature for Reynolds numbers up to 2×10.

Artifcial neural network approach for the prediction of terminal falling velocity of non-spherical particles through Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids
The investigation of the terminal falling velocity of non-spherical particles is currently one of the most promising topics in sedimentation technology due to its great signifcance in many separation processes. In this study, the potential of Artifcial Neural Networks (ANNs) for the prediction of nonspherical particles terminal falling velocity through Newtonian and nonNewtonian (power law) liq...
متن کاملExperimental measurement of settling velocity of spherical particles in unconfined and confined surfactant-based shear thinning viscoelastic fluids.
An experimental study is performed to measure the terminal settling velocities of spherical particles in surfactant based shear thinning viscoelastic (VES) fluids. The measurements are made for particles settling in unbounded fluids and fluids between parallel walls. VES fluids over a wide range of rheological properties are prepared and rheologically characterized. The rheological characteriza...
متن کاملCarbon dioxide hydrate particles for ocean carbon sequestration
This paper presents strategies for producing negatively buoyant CO2 hydrate composite particles for ocean carbon sequestration. Our study is based on recent field observations showing that a continuous-jet hydrate reactor located at an ocean depth of ~1500 m produced curved negatively buoyant cylindrical particles with diameters ~ 2.5 cm and lengths up to ~ 1 m. Accordingly we performed new lab...
متن کاملTumbling Motion of Elliptical Particles in Viscous Two-dimensional Fluids
The settling dynamics of spherical and elliptical particles in a viscous Newtonian fluid are investigated numerically using a finite difference technique. The terminal velocity for spherical particles is calculated for different system sizes and the extrapolated value for an infinite system size is compared to the Oseen approximation. Special attention is given to the settling and tumbling moti...
